Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) for IIT’S/NIT’S/State Engineering Colleges

The joint entrance examination (JEE) for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is going to create history from 2013 as the central government decided to work on a common entrance test for all government-engineering colleges.

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are all set to bring a new change in the pattern for Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) which was conducted every year across the country. The changed exam pattern would be followed from the year 2013.This is a combine exam of JEE and AIEEE, A single exam for entrance in all 13 IITs, 45 NITs, 5 IISc and Colleges under AIEEE.

Why changes in JEE are required?Importance of JEE is to reduce the mental stress on students by preventing multiple entrance exams. For example, students joining in IIT are not concentrating in common exams. Instead, they spend more time for IIT, JEE entrance tests. So, as per the new scheme more importance will be given to the main exams.

JEE will have two parts – JEE Advanced and JEE Main. The Joint Entrance Examination for admission to the undergraduate programmes in engineering would be conducted in two parts, JEE-MAIN and JEE-ADVANCED. This was approved by IITs, NITs and other institutions.

JEE-MAIN tests shall be multiple choice objective type paper; however, the Joint Admission Board of IITs shall determine the nature and pattern of the JEE-ADVANCED.

JEE Advanced will be conducted after JEE Main with enough time gap (4-5 weeks after JEE main) such that JEE Main results are available .

Admissions to the IITs will be based only on the rank achieved in JEE advanced test JEE advance will be conducted by the IITs and the rank achieved in this exam will be considered for the admissions to IITs.

Results of JEE main will be used to filter students for JEE advancedAround1,50,000(including all categories) students will be filtered from JEE- Main to appear for JEE advanced. However the ranking from JEE Main will not be considered for the admission to the IITs. The merit list for admission into IIT would be drawn on the basis of All India rank in JEE-advanced provided the candidate are in the top 20 percentile.

The JEE result will specify the Board Marks. The percentile rank of a student in the Board, he or she appears in, will be the marks out of hundred for the Board marks component. The rank should be given up to 9 decimal places to enable tie breaking. The formula to be used for the percentile rank is to be
(cl+ 0.5ƒi)/N × 100
where cl is the count of all scores less than the score of interest, ƒi is the frequency of the score of interest (the number of students with the same score), and N is the number of examinees in the sample.

The percentile rank of students are to be based on the scores obtained
from adding the marks obtained in the Board examination in the following subjects a) Physics, b)Chemistry, c) Mathematics, d) one language subject, e) best subject among the electives taken by the student.

For example:If Ravi graduated 25th out of a class of 150 students, then 125 students were ranked below Jason. Ravi's percentile rank would be:

Ravi's standing in the class at the 84th percentile is as higher as or higher than 84% of the graduates.

Final ranking for IIT Admission - XII board marks will be used as eligibility criteria.Admission to the IITs would be based only on rank achieved in the JEE Advance test subject to the condition that such candidates were in the top 20 percentile (not percentage) of successful candidates in their boards in applicable categories. Top 20 percentile would vary from board to board every year.

According to new pattern, the percentage requirement will be as follows:
General category
  • CBSE: 77.8%
  • Tamil Nadu board: 78.1%
  • Karnataka: 67.5%
  • Uttar Pradesh: 65%
  • Madhya Pradesh: 64%
  • West Bengal board exam: 58%
Selection Process to NIT’S/centrally funded institutions. To create an umbrella for single entrance exam for all engineering aspirants in India, the National Institutes of Technology (NITs)resolved to give 40% weightage to class XII board results for entrance to their undergraduate programme from the next academic session. Aspirants for the central engineering institutes will appear for one exam, JEEMAIN that will have 60% weightage.

"The formula worked out is very simple...40 per cent weightage to board results and 60% to the mains,"

The 40% weightage to the board results will be given after the process of normalization of marks of the state board

Note that Students seeking admission to these institutes would not have to appear for the advance test that has been proposed earlier.

Language of the Question paper:Candidates can opt for question papers either in English or in Hindi. The option has to be exercised while filling Application form. It cannot be changed later. However, those candidates who will opt question paper medium as Hindi, bilingual question papers both in Hindi & English will be provided to them for offline testing.

The examination shall also be conducted in a State’s language, if the State participates in JEE, in respect of the candidates who are bonafide residents of the state ( pursuing/pursued class XII or equivalent class from that state) and have opted for the State language.

State engineering colleges/Deemed universitiesAdmission to several deemed universities will also be on the basis of scores in the "main" exam, which earlier took students on basis of AIEEE scores. Minimum percentage criteria will be fixed for these too.

The CBSE will conduct the JEE MAIN. The states will have the freedom to join the process for admissions in their engineering colleges and the autonomy to determine their own relative weightages to Std XII marks, and performance in Main.

According to human resource development minister KapilSibal, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Haryana have already decided to adopt this new model for their engineering exams from 2013.
Implementation of the Pattern: Under this compromised formula, the new structure of JEE will be implemented from year 2013 itself.

To prevent any disadvantage to the previous batches of Std XII, it has been decided that those who appeared for the Std XII exam in 2012 can improve their performance by reappearing for the same in 2013.

Let us understand the advantages and disadvantages of one all India level Entrance Exam (with the example of Engineering) before deriving any conclusion on the subject.

New JEE advantages
  • Ranking would be based on All India level on the test, which would mean anyone obtaining a particular rank, can be sure of the college and the stream he or she could get into as there would be no double application to various colleges.
  • Presently one candidate appearing for IIT-JEE also appears for AIEEE and fares well in State Level Entrance Exam for Engineering, which means a student has to be mentally cautious of the number of exams attempted and await result. Now we are relieved from these as a single entrance exam is conducted under one umbrella.
  • Moreover students who are in despair that they might be in the waiting list till the seats are allotted to them are now set free as there is one exam-one result which will enable them to take any other decision suiting them.
  • Students can get admissions in hi-fi and well recognized colleges and institutions very easily
  • Students will not get affected due to the modifications in the JEE exam structure.
  • Can spend more time for their final main exams
  • This is quite economical as it avoids in spending huge amount for entrance coaching
  • Can prevent stress death at the entrance results.
Disadvantages” If situation is unavoidable - face it”. It would be wise to discuss very little on this at this point when this is effectively going to be implemented. However, a few points are listed down below:

According to the new IIT- JEE Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) entrance test 2013, the cut-offs will vary for different boards year to year. It will prove to be a disadvantage for students as the cut-offs may vary up to 20%.

One entrance would compromise on the quality of entrance exam, as it is not bound to be tougher.

The consequences will turn out to be bad if the student misses out the exam due to unforeseen situations.

The Hindustan Times carried a report on a 2009 Indian Institute of Science study of performance of students from India’s 29 boards over 10 years in the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), a common national test to select India’s brightest class XII science students. The average score of students from the CBSE, ICSE, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh boards far exceeded those of students from other boards. The implications are obvious.

There may many students who are not in the top 20 percentile of the better boards, but are actually brighter than those in the top 20 in the laggards. However, they won’t get into an IIT.

According to data from the National Institute of Science, Technology and Development Studies, in 2010, 29,000 students sat for the ICSE (science stream), while 600,000 took the Uttar Pradesh board exams (science). So only 5,800 ICSE students will be eligible for IITs, while from UP, 120,000 will be eligible! This, when the KVPY results show that an ICSE student does much better in science than the UP board student. So, the better the board, the less chance you have of getting into IIT. The bigger the board, the higher your chances. This percentile “quota” is just plain ridiculous.

There was still confusion as to whether the language paper marks would be considered for Intermediate weightage and whether the different State boards were ready to provide the percentile data of top 20 per cent students on their boards. Some boards consider only 12th class marks for the final marks while some consider both the 11th and 12th marks and even the OBC list was different in each State.

It’s unfair to thrust the new method on the aspirants after the commencement of the academic year. They should be given enough time to change their preparation style and it should be introduced from 2014.

Finally, it was unfortunate that eligibility of student was being decided after completing the three tests -- Intermediate, JEE Main and JEE-Advanced.

Comments

  1. I am not in favor of this new pattern of IITjee or ISEET.This pattern supports CBSE candidates in comparison to the other regional boards students.CBSE students scores higher than the other regional board candidates.
